Description:

In 2015, eight thousand members of the Ontario Municipal Employees Retirement System (OMERS) pension plan retired. Over the next dozen years, your baby boomer employees will have passed through your workforce. What should you know about your soon-to-retire employees…their attitude to work, their capabilities, their interests? What should you know about retirement… longevity trends, risks and pitfalls for employees, the frequency of part-time work and other retirement activities? Phased or semi-retirement is increasing. Is this an opportunity for employers to explore? Based on our review of Canadian and American retirement research, and our observations from nearly 100 retirement planning seminars with 2,000 soon-to-retire municipal employees, MROO can help employers to adapt and support a “soon-to-retire” workforce.

Outcomes:
– helpful facts and figures about municipal sector retirement trends
– some hints from neuroscience about the capabilities of the aging brain in the workplace
– understanding of older employees’ attitude to their work and of their hopes and fears about retirement
– understanding of the pitfalls facing those who retire for the wrong reasons
– options for employers and employees to explore for continued mutually-valuable attachment to the workplace by aging employees
