Description:

What began as a partnership between the City of Brantford’s Neighbourhood Hubs and the Brantford Public Library to extend the reach of summer literacy tutoring developed into a rich collaboration to bring ‘Maker’ events into Neighbourhood Hub schools.
Brantford neighbourhoods with schools scoring lower than the provincial average in EQAO could benefit from summer literacy tutoring offered by the Public Library.  However, these are not the kids that come into the library for help.  Partnering with the City’s Neighbourhood Hubs, library tutors went out to the schools to deliver tutoring on site.
This was only the start of a growing relationship between library staff and the City’s Social Services department.  Attempting to build engagement in these communities, ‘Maker’ events brought neighbourhoods together and featured ‘Maker’ activities from community volunteers, area schools and the library. Work continues to grow these relationships to build prosperous communites and improve student success.

Learning Outcomes
Participants will learn how this type of partnership could be reproduced in their own communities.
Participants will gain knowledge of why this collaboration is essential to a community’s success.
