Days: Thursday. Event Types: Session. Sectors: Special Libraries. Subjects: Community Partnerships, Literacy, and Prison Libraries.

Description:

Library professionals from across the country are supporting Canadian prisoners’ rights to read, to learn, and to access information. This support and access is done through prison librarianship, association work, public library support, and other innovative ways in order to create opportunities for, and to engage with, our community members who are serving time in correctional institutions.  Join our national panel of library volunteers, inmate advocates, and prison librarians as they discuss what is happening in Canadian prisons today, and specifically how the support of prison library programming and bibliographic rehabilitation can be effective in helping to reduce rates of recidivism and encouraging successful reintegration into our communities.

Learning Outcomes
1. Hear about prison library programming and services being offered in correctional institutions around the country.
2. Determine how you can build partnerships/relationships between your own library community and prisons through shared resources and experiences from those library professionals who are already working and volunteering in the field.
3. Learn about the newly drafted Canadian Prisoners’ Right to Read document.
