Description:

A new equity programming initiative by the University of Toronto Libraries created opportunities to engage with LGBTQ+ students, faculty and staff that went beyond the traditional academic library framework. Programming included tours, film series, instruction sessions, and other activities. Through this initiative, the libraries demonstrated alternative avenues to connect with library services, promoted the library as a positive space, strengthened relationships with faculty and academic departments, and improved LGBT student engagement.  In this interactive session, we will discuss the importance of equity programming at a university library and look at how you can accomplish your goals by building on your existing programs and services and collaborating with other campus libraries, equity and student support offices, student organizations, and/or academic departments.
The principles and examples discussed will be relevant and applicable to outreach initiatives to other underrepresented communities. Come ready to share your own initiatives and discuss new ideas or collaborations.
