This session will explore how librarians can make a shift in their information literacy instruction practices, build sustainable collaborative relationships with faculty and allow students the essential time they need to uncover the big ideas of information literacy. By incorporating modular and online instruction into the library instruction program, we are building the capacity to shift our instruction practices away from skills-based, standards-driven, one-shot instruction. Influenced by the ACRL Framework and Wiggins and McTighe’s Understanding by Design model, we are focusing on our big ideas and placing our students at the centre of our instruction. This entails strategically stepping back and allowing faculty to engage more fully in information literacy instruction with the students, and, taking a different approach to assessment.
Outcomes:
– Uncover an alternative approach to one-shot library instruction that is more conducive to student-centred learning.
– Critique this alternative approach, identifying strengths and weaknesses in its application.
