Many undergraduate programs in both college and universities require a baseline understanding of numeric and geospatial data, and associated statistical and GIS software, yet many secondary students enter post-secondary programs with little to no experience using these data sources and tools. Incorporation of these sources in secondary coursework promotes the exploration and analysis of patterns, both statistical and geospatial, to understand the data and create meaningful visualizations (maps, charts, graphs, and apps).
This sessions brings together Academic Librarians working in areas of data services and education to promote awareness and use of these sources at the secondary level to encourage interest in a broad range of post-secondary programs as well as competencies to support their post-secondary success.
Secondary Teacher Librarians can provide vital communication about these resources in their schools, and help students discover the many study and career opportunities requiring this particular type of literacy.
Learning Outcomes
To expand awareness of open data sources among secondary Teacher Librarians
To explain importance of data literacy as a baseline competency for secondary graduates
To identify secondary course applications for these resources, as well as corresponding post secondary program pathways at both college and universities.
