When: Thursday, Jan 28 | 3:45 pm - 5:00 pm

Location: MTCC 206E

Days: Thursday. Event Types: Session. Sectors: College & University Libraries. Subjects: Citation, Data, and Impact.

Description:

Data, in its many forms (original documents, surveys or experiments etc.) and secondary analysis undertaken to fertilise these otherwise raw materials, underpins sound research, enabling replication and knowledge dissemination.  Data, therefore, needs to be referenced and attributed with the same precision as derived publications.
The relationship between the various stakeholders in the research process, including creators, distributors and users of data will be explored in articulating the processes, technical requirements and responsibilities of all stakeholders in enabling data to be shared, linked and cited as an independent intellectual output.
This highly practical session will outline current practices and principles in effective data citation across disciplines as well as ongoing challenges and proposed solutions in enabling reliable and efficient identification and attribution of dynamic subsets and collections of data.
Finally, the presentation will discuss tools, measures and approaches to demonstrate, evaluate and reward a holistic spectrum of research outputs.

Learning Outcomes
Be able to explain why data citation and linking between data and publications is important.
Recognise and apply current standards and identifiers to render dynamic data items and collections citable across disciplines.
Be aware of major international initiatives and evolving practices and recommendations in the area of data citation.
