Description:

Graphic novels continue to be the most circulated resources in our libraries. Using graphic novels, comics and comic strips with classes in your learning commons will nurture reluctant readers and guarantee engaged readers during language classes.  Participants will see how graphic novels directly support curriculum outcomes through their use in literature circles, superhero comic battles and discussions about diversity.  Graphic novels are perfect for teaching inference, character development and what makes a hero.  Learn how graphic novels can bridge the transition from picture books to novel reading.

Learning Outcomes

  • will understand how to organize a superhero battle of the books
  • will be able to create discussion questions and activities for reading comics and graphic novels
  • will recognize the place of comics, comic strips and graphic novels in the school learning commons
