Description:

John Fink, Digital Scholarship Librarian at McMaster University, usually presents about technology issues in librarianship. In 2015, he was the recipient of the CLA Alan MacDonald Mentorship Award, so in this session he will address his methodology and approach to mentorship in libraries, from dealing with prospective library school students, current students, and early career librarians. Given the changing nature of librarianship and challenges of the current labour market, what works? What doesn’t? What can we, as mid-career and later librarians, do for those new to the profession? How do we maintain positivity while still being realistic? Just what is the future of libraries?

Learning Outcomes
Knowledge of the current state of early career librarianship and the job hunt.
Empathetic methods for helping students and prospective students.
How to keep up on current issues in library employment and mentorship.
