Description:

We will talk about the process of starting up a makerspace in a high school. We will look at who to consult at the administrative level, board level, public library, and community. Challenges as far as room design, furniture, storage, security, resources, donations from the community will be discussed. How do you access money to set a makerspace? How does the maker culture connect to developing skills such as collaboration, creativity, and communication? Where does maker culture fit with a traditional high school curriculum and foster deeper learning?

Learning Outcomes:

– learn how to set up a makerspace in a high school

– learn how to access resources, eg. financial, human, material for a makerspace

– learn how to connect makerspace mind set to curriculum and staff
