From Robots to Space Travel, todays’ scienctific advancements are rapidly catching up to and surpassing yesterday’s science fiction, the genre continues to experience tremendous popularity in movies and television and in literature. Often referred to as “a literature of ideas”, it continually pushes the boundaries of reality. From Space Operas to hard science, the genre is vast and deep, and it encourages readers to think about issues that hit close to home such as technology, war, religion and politics. This session will explain the definition of science fiction and how it differs from fantasy. It will also explore the value of studying sci-fi and how it can be used for inquiry and discussion across the curriculum. Participants will also learn about key science fiction titles for kids and teens that will both entertain and make readers think, wonder and ask questions.

Learning Outcomes
To learn the definition and characteristics of Science Fiction and how it differs from Fantasy;
Learn about some of the topics and questions that promote discussion and inquiry across the curriculum;
Get recommendations of key science fiction novels for kids and teens that both entertain and provoke discussion.
