Description:

Academic libraries are always looking for new ways to teach and engage students. This session describes a novel pedagogical strategy that college and university librarians across Ontario can easily adopt. The strategy is called a “library pre-show” and is ideal for first or second year classes held in large lecture theatres. A library pre-show is modeled after pre-shows presented at movie theatres before the previews start. A library pre-show transforms the otherwise unused 10 minutes before class starts into an opportunity to engage with students. Much like a movie pre-show, a library pre-show is a looping presentation with fun facts, trivia, and promotional messages. However, its focus is teach core concepts of information literacy and the availability of library services and resources relevant to their coursework. Unobtrusive on class-time, easy to develop and deploy, library pre-shows hold considerable potential. This presentation will include a demonstration and practical tips.
