Description:

As librarians, all we want to do is collaborate and share, but it can be difficult to engage communities and demonstrate the value of library services.  While libraries are creative, dynamic, organizations, few librarians have formal training in marketing, advocacy, or communications.
This presentation takes the University of Toronto Libraries Scholarly Communications and Copyright Office’s Zero to Low Cost Course (ZTLCC) project as a case study for the opportunities and challenges of building a successful next generation library initiative.  By splicing existing successful projects with new technology and new creativity, the ZTLCC lowered student course costs, improved library efficiency, and better leveraged our collection in support of the teaching mission of the university.
Participants will have a chance to capitalize on the successes of and learn from the failures of this project, and will be better prepared to develop and promote their library’s experimental and creative services and initiatives.

Learning Outcomes
1: How to build projects that creatively respond to rapidly changing environments
2: How to use strategic marketing to establish new services or ideas, and promote their benefits
3: How to engage emerging technologies to enhance library initiatives and perform self-assessment.
