Description:

In the 21st Century, feminism is no longer a dirty word. Books for girls aren’t just about princesess, romance & gossipy mean-girls, and the fiction that girls read should represent the strong, intelligent and courageous girls that we want our children/students to be. In the years between childhood and college, girls are at a critical crossroads of self-discovery and expression. It is a time when they can lose their vitality, their resiliance, their sense of self and their identity. This seminar will suggest titles that can help frame conversations girls are facing such as shifting friendships, peer pressure, body image, relationships and sexual issues such as consent, rape culture, abuse and sexual assault. From 8 to 18, books for a variety of ages & backgrounds will be included.

Learning Outcomes
Will introduce positive fictional female role-models; the traits to look for in these characters.
Will define what “strong girls/ Feminism” actually means.
Will show how fiction can be a conversation starter for discussing the important issues surrounding girls/ women today
