When: Wednesday, Jan 27 | 2:15 pm - 2:55 pm

Location: MTCC 201D

Days: Wednesday. Event Types: Session. Sectors: College & University Libraries. Subjects: ACRL Framework and Instruction.

Description:

The ACRL’s Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education is a catalyst that challenges librarians to transform how we conceptualize and practice instruction. Our presentation takes a close look at our experiments with this new concoction, exploring our methods for mixing elements of the Framework into core Library Instruction Committee (LINC) lesson plans at the University of Waterloo Library in spring 2014. The process of reformulating lesson plans involved consulting with librarians and library associates, studying the Framework, reviewing student feedback, and identifying areas of content overlaps and gaps within current program offerings. These efforts resulted in four new core workshops, which launched in fall 2014. The plans continue to be tested, evaluated, and recreated in order to meet the changing needs of our campus community.
Our presentation will address the challenges we encountered, the results we are observing so far, and the plans we are envisioning for future directions.

Learning Outcomes
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
Use the Framework to develop strategies to address some of the challenges of one-shot instruction sessions;

Develop approaches to the Framework that integrate theory and practice in realistic ways that enrich local instruction.
