Description:

Our nursing students come from all over the world and have lives, experience, and prior learning that couldn’t be more different. So how can we design an online learning resource that meets everyone’s needs equally? This session will outline our planning and development process to create a flexible, modular, and interactive online learning resource for health science research. We will also outline our “avoiding a dry piece of beef” approach to accessibility.

Often this type of project begins by selecting an elearning platform and then building a tutorial based on its capabilities. Instead, we decided to start with the learner. By putting the learner at the centre of the development, and choosing a variety of technology based on its ability to meet individual learning outcomes, we were able to create a suite of resources that can be used as a linear tutorial, or remixed and re-purposed for different learning scenarios.

Learning Outcomes
1. Identify design principles for creating pedagogically sound and accessible learning objects
2. Apply a learner-centred approach to developing multi-platform online learning resources to their own context
3. Describe strategies for achieving buy-in and support from institutional partners.
