Library technology has traditionally centred on the integrated library system (ILS) or library services platform (LSP). The ILS/LSP provides libraries with a holistic solution to manage all aspects of the library’s operations. Yet, at times, this all-inclusive approach to library management may not be required or even desired.
Libraries may indeed have an interest in the unraveling of monolithic systems in favour of modular technology that supports evolving institutional needs. This model can bring increased workflow efficiencies and result in better services. Moreover, modularity may spur innovation in areas of information literacy, research metrics, linked data, and beyond. This panel will present a new community collaboration that’s well underway to develop an open source library services platform based on a modular model in library technology.
Outcomes:
Participants will learn about a community-driven development of a new open source library services platform. They will understand the development principles behind the platform and learn how they can join the community and partake in the project.
