Description:

Demand for books that reflect Canada’s diverse population remains high, and local authors and publishers continue to offer new titles each season to meet this important need. Building on an engaging 2016 panel discussion, we invite you to join educator and children’s literature expert, Fatma Faraj, in a follow-up session as she introduces new and forthcoming Canadian books on diverse subjects and themes. Fatma will offer her expert advice on discovering and incorporating titles that address topics including race, gender, sexuality, religion and ability into your library collection and programming – all from a Canadian perspective. Your collection has the classics – come and discover something new.

Lists and a display of new and forthcoming Canadian titles published celebrating diversity will be made available at the session. Light refreshments will also be provided.

Outcomes:
– Participants will be introduced to the latest selection of Canadian books featuring diverse subjects and themes.
– Participants will learn how to incorporate diverse books into library programming in order to spark student inquiry and learning.
– Participants will brainstorm best practices for title discovery and selection.
– Participants will understand why books that reflect Canada’s diversity are essential to school library collections.
