Documentary heritage is a cornerstone of all democratic societies. It supports economic, social and cultural growth and understanding. Digital technologies make it possible for memory institutions to provide greater access to their documentary heritage holdings.
Canadian memory institutions are working together to find ways to improve access to digital collections and better preserve our cultural heritage. The National Heritage Digitization Strategy (NHDS) is a national plan to ensure the long-term preservation of documentary heritage records by encouraging quality, standards-based efforts. It complements the strategies developed by Canadian memory institutions and helps them meet their goals.
This session will include an overview of the NHDS; presentations by Steering Committee members on their digitization activities; and an open discussion on the proposed NHDS action plan.
Outcomes
- Learn about the NHDS – the objectives and potential projects; what has been done so far; and what to expect.
- Learn about the digitization work of members of the NHDS Steering Committee.
- Become familiar with the draft NHDS action plan and provide feedback.
