Description:

Terry O’Reilly, host of the popular podcast Under the Influence uses the term “stubborn persistence” as the reason some brands have survived more than century. Is there enduring value for the public that keeps libraries going today? After all, perception is reality. A panel discussion comprised of advertising, marketing and journalism professionals will discuss some of the critical challenges and opportunities of the library brand. This will be a frank and energizing account of our current state with time for dialogue among participants.

Topics include:
How are libraries perceived by those outside of our profession, and how does this impact public library support?

If a library spokesperson is quoted in the media stating “we are more relevant than ever before,” does that match the public’s perception?

When all municipal services are considered, where do libraries fall on the spectrum of “nice to have” and “need to have”?

Outcomes:
An increased understanding of the challenges facing public libraries in terms of relevancy
Enhanced insight into the views and perspectives of thought leaders outside our profession
Benefits of constructive criticism regarding how libraries market and promote their brand
