Description:

Public libraries play a vital role in bringing communities together to instil a sense of belonging for all. Programs designed for adults with special needs are often misrepresented. Learn how Caledon Public Library developed a program to address the lack of meaningful and interactive day programs available to these valued members of our community. In consultation with Brampton Caledon Community Living, Library Living was designed with a person-centred approach, where all participants are treated with respect and dignity. The monthly programs are theme-based, featuring stories, music, guest speakers, crafts, games, library orientations, and book talks. Learn how this program was created, and how to engage and establish partnerships with community groups that work with adults with special needs.

Outcomes:
– An understanding of the term “intellectual disability”
– The importance of inclusion in our libraries
– Concrete ideas on how to start a Library Living program and equally important, how to maintain and even expand
– A “Getting Comfortable” discussion around common “special needs” issues such as language barriers, respect, personal space, acceptable public behaviour, etc.
– An overview of program essentials such as themes, time management, set-up, long-term planning and program facilitation
– How to integrate books and stories, art, music, movement, refreshments (dietary awareness) into programs
– Ideas about community partnerships
