Description:

Translate your passions into pop-up programming! The East Gwillimbury Public Library charged “full steam ahead” with STEM programming, and used their passionate and engaged staff to lead the way. Small, STEM-focused installations began quietly popping up around the library and community, initiating the conversation about the importance of STEM education. Using Makey Makey powered plants and Google Cardboard virtual reality vacations, staff have found a great new way to excite their patrons about their scheduled programming. The result is a community that is eagerly awaiting the release of each program schedule, and a growing network of outreach possibilities.

East Gwillimbury’s STEM programming started off small, but now it’s booming! Learn from two EGPL staff’s experience and harness your creativity as you create pop-up installations of your own in this very interactive presentation.

Outcomes:
– Learn about the East Gwillimbury Library’s experiment with pop-up installations, and how they leveraged passionate staff to expand awareness of their new STEM focused programming.
– This will be followed by a workshop session, where participants will identify potential areas where their own passions could translate into pop-up programs or installations of their own.
– Will be given a hands-on demonstration of some pop-up installations, and the opportunity to create their own during the demonstration.
