As accessing the legal system has become very difficult over the past several years, people often come to their local library to get information about how to solve their legal issues. In some cases, people ask library staff for help and don’t know that their problems have a legal component. Having access to accurate, plain language legal information is extremely useful as a first step to solving legal issues. It can help patrons identify whether they have a legal problem, inform them of their legal rights and responsibilities, and help them figure out next steps in the legal process. This workshop will demonstrate how library staff can effectively use legal information websites to find information that will help patrons address issues in many areas of law including housing, employment, family, and more. The workshop will also cover how to make effective referrals for patrons who need legal advice. Attendees are asked to bring their preferred device with them.
