Description:

Low literacy rates and poverty, sadly, are often linked together. In order to fuel literacy and provide a relevant service to the hidden hungry, East Gwillimbury Public Library (EGPL) partnered with a community group, Network North, to address the need for a local food pantry and bring awareness of the learning supports offered by the EGPL. Free pop-up programming was offered during the hours of the pantry in the library and social workers on site were able to redirect clients to social services available. In addition to receiving a basket of food and a library card, each client received a free book to keep. The intent of the Food Pantry is to offer a hand-up, rather than a hand-out, provide food education and knowledge of library resources to support the ability to learn which better position the customers for success.

Outcomes:
– Participants will learn how they can get involved in food sustainability projects and to relate it to their strategic plans
– Learn how to leverage the library’s unique position in the library to connect with strategic community partners and develop relevant, collaborative services to meet community needs
– Learn how providing a relevant service through the public library brings community awareness and support to social issues
