Ever wonder what your new librarian colleagues are thinking about? We admit, we’re not totally sure either…but we’ve got some ideas! Recognizing that a gap existed in terms of opportunities new librarians had to connect with each other, we organized the inaugural New Librarians Symposium (NLS), held in June 2016 at Ryerson University. NLS brought together early career professionals from various fields for a jam-packed day of lightning talks, presentations, birds of a feather conversations, and a leadership panel. We’ve synthesized the conversations that emerged and created a presentation which explores the collective mind of new professionals. This presentation will discuss themes related to early career perspectives, issues affecting new professionals, leadership from all levels, and skill development.
Outcomes:
– Gain knowledge of the major themes and findings from the inaugural New Librarians Symposium
– Understand the perspectives and concerns of new information professionals
– Leave with tangible ideas for how to support new professionals
