Description:

Creative non-fiction (CNF) is non-fiction writing that reads like a novel but is absolutely true. Book-to-film CNFs include Social Network, 127 Hours, Girl Interrupted and Catch Me If You Can. The introduction of a separate and distinct CNF book collection into our high school library has accomplished a number of positives: increased numbers of students reading for enjoyment; increased numbers of students completing English assignments; increased knowledge and in-depth understanding of a subject or issue; that is, increased functional literacy. In this session we will discuss types and forms of CNF, CNF readers’ advisory, Dewey subject coverage, differing applications in Academic and Applied levels, and extension into Independent Study. We suggest how to use CNF to hook reluctant readers; we discuss what it is that makes our most popular narratives successful with students; and, we leave you with an extensive list of titles and reference websites.

Outcomes:
Understanding of Creative Nonfiction; how CNF can be incorporated into curriculum, can enhance curriculum delivery; list of CNF titles; print and digital resources; and the most popular titles with students.
