Social justice, questions of equality and the larger question of connections to the world carry their impact from school to home and beyond. How can novels and non-fiction narratives further reality-based learning and help students create a path of life-long success? This session will discuss how these themes can be introduced to elementary and secondary students, and how educators can use stories to jump-start students into writing their own fiction and non-fiction works. Help your students find the hero within!
Outcomes:
– Learn how complex themes of justice, diversity, and equality can be simplified and introduced to young students as well as how to use these themes to spark discussion with older students.
– Discover how fictional writing can be used as a springboard for essay and non-fiction writing.
– Be introduced to a selection of books that deal (explicitly and subtly) with issues of social justice.
