So, you’re breaking up with your old systems: a new discovery layer, catalogue, link resolver, or ILS. In a process that is usually time pressured, stressful and chaotic, how do we help our users and staff through the transition between systems? Usability testing can help us evaluate the effect of the transitions and inform the process itself. But how do you include usability testing into your process to ensure you’re providing a better user experience for your patrons? How do you make testing a priority in the migration process when there are so many other elements that need to be considered and dealt with? This session will examine these questions by exploring one institution’s migration process and suggest a wide range of tools and techniques to include in your migration process. Learn about ethnographic and usability testing methods and tools and what may work (or not) in large migration projects.
Outcomes:
– Usability testing and ethnographic methods
– Issues to consider when migrating systems
– Methods to make user experience (UX) a priority in large projects
