Location: MTCC 203B

Days: Thursday. Event Types: Session. Sectors: OLA. Subjects: Collections, Cultural Awareness, and Diversity.

Description:

Every young person needs to see themselves in the books they read, hence the outcry for collections that are inclusive and reflect diversity. Whether you’re looking for characters of diverse colour, sexual orientation, ability, or cultural and economic backgrounds, it’s there to be found in youngCanLit.

Let CanLit for LittleCanadians blogger, Helen Kubiw, equip you with an arsenal of comprehensive book lists (and perhaps a hard-copy) of titles by Canadian authors and illustrators to support a Canadian-based diversity collection for children and young adults that will help teachers and librarians become culturally competent.

Outcomes:
– Participants will become familiar with the wealth of youngCanLit focusing on diversity.
– Participants will be introduced to CanLit for LittleCanadians as a resource link for teachers, librarians, and readers.
– Participants will discover titles of picture, fiction, young adult and non-fiction books that demonstrate diversity in their characters, situations, or topics.
– Participants will be provided with a detailed and comprehensive list of youngCanLit that fulfill the need for diversity in classroom, school and library collections.
