Location: MTCC 206B

Days: Wednesday. Event Types: Session. Sectors: Public Libraries. Subjects: Design and Engagement.

Description:

You are committed and passionate about your service. But does your physical environment convey your values? Traditional shelving layouts in both schools and public libraries look pretty boring. They are organized for people who know what they want and are prepared to make an effort to find it. What about those students and patrons – an increasing number – who need to be tempted to pick up a book?

Rachel Van Riel, Director of Opening the Book North America, will talk about the new concept of a discovery layout in a library space, with Canadian examples currently being implemented from Lac La Biche to Niagara-on-the-Lake. Come and join the discussion about what makes a library or learning commons attractive and engaging. This session is Relevant to those managing or working in a library, and to those who want to change their space or plan a new one.

Outcomes:
– Learn to analyze how libraries signal messages to their customers and how these messages can be changed without spending lots of money.
– See how an understanding of consumer psychology can help to engage adults and children entering a library space.
– Explore how libraries can shift their focus and energy from managing the collection to engaging customers with products and experiences.
